Meet Our Speaker Alumni | Sacha Copland – Need To Dance

Last chance to be a speaker/performer at TEDxWellington 2017!

Sacha Copland is no stranger to the stage – after all, she’s the artistic director of Java Dance Theatre. As part of last year’s TEDxWellington, Sacha spoke about the need to dance.

Describe your TEDxWellington experience
It was magical to meet so many inspired speakers and I loved finding the connections between our different topics. I have done my TEDx talk in lots of different situations now, from the office of Creative New Zealand, to a theatre in Birmingham, but TEDxWellington was my favourite.

What was the effect of TEDxWellington, professionally and personally?
When you are in a field, like dance, that can seem quite mysterious to many people it is so useful to have a talk online that you can share. Shaping the talk helped me to articulate my choreographic philosophy and also to generate interest from other industries.

What have you been up to since you were on the TEDxWellington stage?
Since being on the TEDxWellington stage I have:

  • performed 47 shows of The Wine Project and Back of the Bus in Edinburgh
  • been part of the ‘next generation’ of creators at the world ASSITEJ conference for makers of shows for young people
  • toured all around New Zealand
  • undertaken another residency in France
  • started making a new work called ‘The Creamery’
  • a work for families that is about to premiere in Wellington

What’s next for you?
Premiering and touring Java Dance Theatre’s new work ‘The Creamery’ and possibly going to the Next Generation Alumni Programme in South Africa.

What was your one takeaway from TEDxWellington?
The more we can communicate to people beyond our inner circle or ‘bubble’ the bigger the world becomes.
